Family Weekend

Last weekend was our first overnight trip. We traveled three hours by train from Bamberg to Waechtersbach and Bad Soden. We stayed Friday and Saturday night with cousin Marlot in Waechtersbach. On Sunday we went to the Kress family reunion in Bad Soden. I should note that Max was teething this whole trip.

Marlot is much loved by Stephanie’s Mother (Cathy) and Father (Guenther). She is Guenther’s cousin on his Mother’s side. Marlot lives next door to her daughter Angeka and son-in-law Joaqim. Both of their houses are comfy and have a great way of bringing nature inside. Growing up Stephanie had heard many stories about Marlot and Horst (her late husband), but Stephanie had only briefly met her.We were delighted when Marlot invited us to stay the weekend.

Some of the highlights from that visit are:
1. Great food and conversation
2. Joaqim’s “little walk” (3 hours through beautiful countryside)
3. Oktoberfest in the woods at the Dachshund Hunting Club
I will expand on these later.

The family reunion in Bad Soden was a grand affair. It was held at Hotel Kress which is owned and operated by Rudi Kress. Max was in full teething mode, so Stephanie and I spent a lot of time away from the crowd trying to soothe him. In between crying and temper tantrums, Rudi came over and chatted with us. He has been a professional chef for some 30 years and has some great stories. His cooking specialty is American Cuisine, so the main course was a 30 lb turkey will ALL the trimmings. After the family reunion, Christoph, a cousin from Dresden, helped us navigate the Deutsch Bahn bureaucracy. Let’s just say the trains run perfectly 99% of the time, but oh that 1% is a pain in the ass!

Anyway, coming back to Bamberg really felt like coming home. We are looking forward the next two weeks in Bamberg, but also to coming home to Pensacola.
